This week, 720 of the state’s top prep golfers will tee it up at eight different Spokane and Tacoma courses for the 2012 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Golf Championships.  With the help of a variety of tournament volunteers, Tournament Managers in each of the host sites will be working tirelessly over the next few days to deliver a State Tournament experience that these young golfers will never forget.

Bruce Phillips is the Tournament Manager for the 1B/2B, 1A and 2A State Golf Tournaments for the second consecutive year. Originally from Edmonds, Wash., Phillips is a Woodway High School graduate (1971). He received his Bachelors in Mathematics from Western Washington University (1976) and his Masters in Educational Administration from the University of Washington (1981). His passion for golf stems from a history of playing as well as officiating.  Phillips also watched his daughters play golf in high school and college. He attests to golf being a tough individual sport.

“You need to problem solve your way around the course with minimal assistance.” Phillips said. “Golf requires a lot of maturity and integrity.”

Joe Richer is the Tournament Manager for the 3A, and 4A State Golf Tournaments for the second time around, having previously managed State Golf in Spokane back in 2005-2006. Richer, an Edmonds HS graduate of 1966, attended Everett Community College (1966-68) then went on to WSU where he played football, graduating in 1971.

Richer has worked with several of the individual site managers including Mike Syron (Rogers HS), Jeff Norton (Lewis and Clark HS), Paul Manfred (Gonzaga Prep HS), and Scott Kramer (Spokane Community College Golf Coach) over the last two years. Susan Prugh, who spearheads the Washington State Junior Golf Association officials, assists with the State event as well.

These dedicated individuals that make up the State Golf tournament staff are excited to do their part to create a memorable State Golf experience for all of the young golfers involved.
