  • WIAA Names Jessie Reed and Taylor Wells "Give Me 5" Star Students of the Month
    11/1/2017

The WIAA is pleased to announce Oakesdale Middle School’s Jessie Reed and Freeman Middle School's Taylor Wells as the October “Give Me 5” Star Students of the Month.

Jessie Reed is a seventh grade student at Oakesdale Middle School in Oakesdale, Wash. She is an active member in sports, including volleyball, basketball, and track. Outside of sports, she is the middle school ASB treasurer and a member of National Junior High Honor Society, youth group, 4H and Future Farmers of America (FFA). Currently, she holds a 4.0 GPA.

As a member of the school basketball team, Reed takes pride in home games and greets the visiting team before they enter their locker room. Reed also organizes community service events as a part of her role in ASB. At the most recent county fair, Reed took home the Grand Championship for Fitting and Showing in her age group for swine 4H.

"Jessie is disciplined and focused at all times and it has landed her in a place in our National Junior High Honors Society," school advisor, Patty Mills, said. "Jessie simply does what she need to do to get the job done with a great attitude.

Taylor Wells is an eighth grader at Freeman Middle School in Rockford, Wash. He participates on the football, basketball, and track teams at school.

Wells does everything with honor and to the best of his ability, whether that is in the classroom or on the football field. Freeman Principal Ben Ferney speaks highly of Wells and his hard work ethic and how he sets an example of what a student athlete should look like. He always has a smile on his face and is ready to help in any situation.

Head football coach, Chad Ripke, also talks about Wells as a hard working and respectful person and that his morals and values are in the right place. A great example of Wells' team player midset happened after the shooting at Freeman High School earlier this year.

"He came to me with a bunch of Freeman Strong stickers and asked if he could give them out to all the seventh and eighth grade football players," Ripke said. "To have Taylor think about his community and his teammates and bringing in those Freeman Strong stickers meant a lot to me and the other coaches, but also to his teammates and this community."
