WIAA Announces 2018 Smart Choices Scholarship Winners
Henneman and Sherick Named 2018 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Smart Choices Scholarship Winners

    Updated 5/16/2018

RENTON, Wash. - The WIAA, Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires announced Katie Henneman of Tonasket High School and Kyle Sherick of Tahoma High School as the recipients of the sixth annual Smart Choices Scholarship, Monday.

The winners receive a $5,000 scholarship to the school of their choice. Henneman will attend Washington State University to pursue a career in medicine next fall while Sherick will enroll at Seattle University with plans to major in bioengineering.

In addition to the two $5,000 scholarships, the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires have teamed up to issue eight $1,000 scholarships to four male and four female finalists.

“All of these winners exemplify the values of the WIAA,” said WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese. “They have all seen tremendous success in the realm of athletics and activities but have bettered their schools and communities through their service and dedication.”

Henneman is a 12-time letter winner at Tonasket where she participated in cross country, track and field and cheerleading, serving as the captain of all three teams during her senior year. After finishing 37th overall at the 2015 WIAA State Cross Country Championships, she began a stellar career in track and field where she has competed in at least three events at the State Championship meet in each of her first three years. Henneman’s highest finish came in the spring of her freshman year when she was a member of the fourth-place 4x100 meter relay while her highest individual finish was 11th in the 400 meter as a sophomore.

Excelling equally in the classroom, Henneman holds a GPA of 3.933 and was named the salutatorian of her graduating class. She has challenged herself throughout high school, earning 14 college credits from seven AP courses. Henneman is currently the Senior Class President at Tonasket and has been involved in her community through 4-H and Future Farmers of America, where she served as District 7 Vice President.

Sherick has accrued seven varsity letters during his time with the Bears, earning four in tennis and three in baseball. He helped the Tahoma baseball team earn an appearance to a WIAA State Championship tournament in 2017 and was named Tahoma varsity Baseball Player of the Year in 2016. The senior has earned two first team All-League honors in baseball and two first team All-Division honors in tennis.

Sherick has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his four years at Tahoma and has already earned 25 college credits. A member of National Honor Society, he has been an active member in his community volunteering with the Northwest Harvest Fights Hunger Program, Maple Valley Food Bank and the Veteran Memorial Wreath Program.

“Our founder, Les Schwab, believed in supporting the communities where his employees live and work – that’s why stores and employees do much more than sell tires and brakes," Les Schwab Tire Centers Regional Manager Andy Sherry said. “We invest our time and resources into events and organizations that promote responsibility, hard work and serving the community – values our company believes in. It's why for the last 11 years we are proud to partner with the Dairy Farmers of Washington and the WIAA. Our Smart Choices Scholarship program is just one more way we are trying to make a difference in our communities.”

“Supporting high school athletes is an honor for each of my fellow dairy farmers,” said Dairy Farmers of Washington Board Chair and dairy farmer Michelle Schilter. “We are particularly proud to partner with Les Schwab to provide scholarships to some very deserving student athletes. The Dairy Farmers of Washington wish these students well as they work to fulfill their dreams in college and beyond.”

The two recipients will be presented their scholarships on July 27 at the WIAA Coaches School Luncheon in Yakima.
