  • WIAA Announces 2017-18 Scholastic Cup Champions
    6/4/2018

RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) is proud to announce the 2017-18 Scholastic Cup Champions: Almira Coulee Hartline (1B), Saint George’s (2B), Lynden Christian (1A), Sehome (2A), Interlake (3A) and Camas (4A).

The Scholastic Cup is the WIAA’s most prestigious annual school award. The year-long competition recognizes the top school in each of the six WIAA classifications based on academic, athletic and sportsmanship excellence. Points are awarded by a school’s finish in each of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships and Academic State Championships.

1B) Almira Coulee Hartline won State Championships in football, baseball and softball to help propel the school to its second-consecutive 1B Scholastic Cup. The Warriors’ football team excelled on and off the field, picking up an Academic State Championship as well, joining the boys basketball team with that honor.

2B) Saint George’s finished runners-up in both boys and girls soccer as well as boys basketball, but earned major points in the classroom with four Academic State Championships. Boys soccer, choir, forensics and boys tennis were each crowned academic champions to earn more than a quarter of the school’s winning total of 1,585 points, only 180 points ahead of second place and defending champion Northwest Christian (Colbert). The Dragons were the only school in 2017-18 to win the Scholastic Cup without winning an athletic state championship.

1A) Lynden Christian won the 1A division led by dual championships by its boys and girls basketball teams, the school’s two athletic championships during the 2017-18 school year. The Lyncs racked up four scholastic championships in girls cross country, girls golf, orchestra and softball for a total of 1,500 points, well ahead of the 1A field. The award is the first for Lynden Christian which has three second-place Scholastic Cup finishes.

2A) Sehome captured its fourth-consecutive 2A Scholastic Cup with 1,435 points. The year was powered by WIAA State Championships from the school’s storied boys and girls cross country teams. The other state championship came on the academic side with the girls soccer team earning the Scholastic Award. It was the breadth of high marks, both athletically and academically, that gave them enough points to earn their seventh overall Cup.

3A) Interlake earned its second straight Scholastic Cup with a total of 1,615 points, the most of any school in any classification this year. The Saints finished the year with their lone athletic championship brought home by the girls tennis team. Interlake accrued five Scholastic Championships in band, dance/drill, girls cross country, forensics, boys swimming/diving and girls track and field.

4A) Camas took home the 4A Scholastic Cup with WIAA State Championships in gymnastics, boys swimming/diving and boys track and field. Camas finished with nine top-five finishes in various sports as well as having nine teams ranked in the top-five of their respective categories academically. The honor is the first for the Papermakers who finished second in 2016-17.
