Moehrle and Victor Named 2019 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Smart Choices Scholarship Winners

RENTON, Wash. -
The WIAA, Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires announced Jordan Moehrle of Colton High School and Zach Victor of Federal Way High School as the recipients of the seventh annual Smart Choices Scholarship, Monday.

The winners each receive a $5,000 scholarship to the school of their choice. Moehrle will attend the University of South Carolina to pursue a career in international trade law next fall while Victor will enroll at Washington State University with plans to major in mechanical engineering.

In addition to the two $5,000 scholarships, the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires have teamed up to issue eight $1,000 scholarships to four male and four female finalists.

“All of the award recipients have seen tremendous success both in the realm of athletics and activities, but also in their communities,” said WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese. “These individuals undoubtedly have bright futures ahead of them.”

Moehrle has been no stranger to WIAA State Tournaments during her high school athletic career, accruing four state titles to go along with three other State Championship placings. She was a part of the Wildcats’ State Championship runs on the hardwood in 2016 and 2018, while captaining the team’s 2019 Championship. As a freshman, Moehrle was also a part of Colton’s 1B Softball Championship. While Moehrle’s highlights have been her team’s success, she has garnered plenty of individual accolades as well. The senior has earned All-League honors or better in each of her three sports, including making the All-State Basketball First Team in 2019 and All-State Volleyball Second Team in 2017 and 2018.

The athletic achievements come while holding a 4.0 GPA in the classroom and being heavily involved in leadership and community service. Moehrle has served as her Class President her freshman through junior years of high school, ASB President as a senior, and held the position of Future Farmers of America District VI Vice President. She has been heavily involved in community service in her local community, but has also gained experience through an internship, working with a farmer in Firo, Nigeria to combat hunger and benefit the local economy.

Victor has accumulated 12 varsity letters at Federal Way High School while completing an active and well-rounded high school career as a three-sport athlete and a musician in the school’s orchestra. He has competed at the varsity level in golf, wrestling and track and field in each of his four years with the Eagles and has served as the captain of the golf team his sophomore thru senior seasons while also being named All-League in each of those years.

His leadership has stretched outside of sports, serving as a member of the ASB Budget Committee, a member of the National Eagle Scout Association and holding the position of Vice President for the National Honor Society. Victor’s determination is exemplified by his participation and achievement in all of these areas while battling Ulcerative Colitis. Although the disease has caused him to miss school, he still holds a 3.98 GPA while being enrolled in Honors classes.

"Les Schwab Tire Centers is committed to providing world-class service for our customers and being good neighbors; we're honored to recognize others who share our commitment to service and in making a difference in our community," said Andy Sherry, Regional Manager. "It's why for the past 12 years we are proud to partner with the Dairy Farmers of Washington and the WIAA.  The Smart Choices Scholarships reward students for outstanding accomplishments in activities, academics and community service."

“It is a privilege for the Dairy Farmers of Washington to support these student athletes,” said Michelle Schilter, the Dairy Farmers of Washington Board Chair. “These individuals excel in the classroom and in sports, but most importantly, they have a heart for their communities. My fellow dairy farmers and I wish them well as they pursue their dreams, becoming leaders in Washington and beyond.”

The two recipients will be presented their scholarships on July 26 at the WIAA Coaches School Luncheon in Yakima.
