|Mark Rypien |
Shadle Park, 1981
A Shadle Park High School graduate, Mark Rypien was one of the best athletes to come from his region. On the baseball field, Mark was named to the All Greater Spokane League team, voted team MVP, and selected to the All-State team. During his junior season, Mark led his team to the state finals before winning the championship his senior season. Mark was equally impressive on the basketball court. The two-time All-GSL pick helped Shadle win the state title during his senior year, and Mark was named team MVP before being selected to the All-State team.
Even with all these awards, football seemed to be Mark’s true strong point. He was a vital component of two GSL championship teams during his junior and senior seasons. He was team MVP, named to the All-GSL team and selected to the All-State team. In addition, Mark was an All-American selection by Parade Magazine. His career marks were GSL records and among the top 10 national career list.
Perhaps one of the most impressive of all Mark’s accomplishments remains his All-State selection in three different sports during his senior year. For his efforts, Mark Rypien was named Hertz Athlete of the Year.
After graduation, Mark attended Washington State University where his athletic career seemed to flourish. In 1986, he was drafted by the Washington Redskins. He had many successful seasons in the NFL and was named MVP of the 1992 Super Bowl. The two-time Pro Bowler currently resides in Spokane.
