Thomas Cross began officiating high school basketball 62 years ago in 1942. His first game was between Rainier and Yelm High Schools. His game fee in 1942 was $3.
Cross was instrumental in establishing the Washington Officials Association and is considered by many to be the father of the WOA. During his lifetime, he officiated high school baseball, basketball and football.
Aside from becoming a top notch high school official, Cross also excelled as a college football and basketball official. He served as a Pac-10 official for 27 years in football and 16 years in basketball. He officiated the 1963 and 1973 Rose Bowl games and was named a National Football League Officials’ Observer and Scout in 1976.
