Smith, who also has coached at Bridgeport and Castle Rock, coached from 1966 to 1991 and compiled a career record of 171-70-2. He guided Omak to the Class 1A state championship in 1979. Smith was inducted into the Washington State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
At Omak, Smith coached boys track for six years and then spent the next 15 years coaching the girls. During that time his teams won 10 league titles, 10 district championships, and won the state championship in 1983. Gary coached seven state champions and his athletes set five state-meet records. Smith was inducted into the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1999. During the summers, he coached AAU track from 1969 to 1988 in Omak and neighboring towns.
Smith also coached girl’s basketball at Omak and currently coaches at Tonasket High School. As a head coach, he placed second in state twice and named league coach of the year five times.
He served in education for 34 years as a teacher, counselor, and coach. He has also served as a State Coaches Association Member for more than 30 years.
