|Joyce Walker |
Garfield High School, 1980
By most accounts, Joyce Walker is the best basketball player, regardless of gender, to ever play in the state of Washington. A three-time high school All-American, Walker’s accomplishments during her prep career are legendary. She capped off her high school years by leading her team to an undefeated season and winning the AAA state championship. Twenty-three years later, she still holds eight state championship records.
Her talents continued on the basketball court at Louisiana State University from 1981-1984. While at LSU Walker was named all Southeastern Conference (SEC) three times, earned All-American honors twice, led the SEC in scoring for three consecutive years and is currently the second leading scorer in SEChistory with 2,906 points and a career average of 24.8 points per game.
After college Walker represented the United States on numerous national teams and was the second woman to make the roster of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters’ basketball team.
Walker has also established herself as a vital part of the Seattle community by coaching numerous high school and youth basketball teams in the area. She is currently the girls’ basketball coach at Garfield High School where she is also a staff member.
