|Auburn High School Forensics |
Auburn High School dominated state forensics from 1981 – 2000, as well as sending numerous students to nationals. When the program began, the team consisted of 12 students. In almost ten years, this number grew to 150, and remained so through 2000.
During this span, Auburn was state champions in speech and debate fifteen times in several different events: Cross-Examination debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate, Student Congress and speech. They won 4 sweepstakes awards as the winner for the district tournament and were honored by the National Forensics League 4 times as Leading Chapter. Auburn sent 38 students to nationals, out of which they placed in top the 10 three times.
The team was lead by Director Mike Burton. With over thirty-five years of experience, he has become a well-respected teacher of forensics. The list of awards he has received, as the Auburn Director, is extensive: Honored by National Forensic League with the Distinguished Service Award (4 citations), WIAA (Section 8 Outstanding Forensics Director), KSTW (Class Act Teacher 1993-94), PEMCO and Channel 9 (Golden Apple), PLU (Outstanding Forensics Educator), and Clark College (Graduation Speaker and Outstanding Alumni).
