A Winning Coach

My school, Burlington-Edison High School, is known for its success and competitive nature in athletics. Many of our sports teams and athletes have had successful seasons and work hard to maintain the Burlington standard, with high rankings and winning records. Our volleyball team is one that consistently has winning seasons and state titles.

They’ve gone to state twelve years in a row, and brought home four state championships in the past seven years. Winning state championships isn’t an easy accomplishment, it takes amazing athletes, and an even better coach. Coach Tawnya Brewer is the reason our volleyball team has been so successful.
Coach Brewer has been coaching for twenty one years, has an overall record of 348 wins to 102 losses, was inducted into the Washington State Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and has four state titles. This is an incredible feat for any coach of any sport. She uses her knowledge and passion of the sport to teach and push her players to an elite level. I’ve watched B-E volleyball play at every state tournament since I was six years old, and I can see the connection Coach Brewer has had with every team. Coach Brewer’s players trust, respect, and look up to her, which allows them to work together to accomplish all of these victories.

winning games and taking state titles, Coach Brewer has created a fan club behind the volleyball team. B-E students of all kinds want to watch the volleyball team because everyone knows they’re good and that they always have a potential for winning state. At the state volleyball tournament the average amount of students per team is anywhere from ten to twenty. This is not the case for Burlington-Edison. Last year nearly 75 kids were cheering on the Tigers at the state championship game.
This kind of support isn’t only seen at state games. At home matches there is usually only enough people to open one side of the bleachers, but last year was different. After a little bit of hype on the morning announcements and through social media, we built up enough crowd support to open up the other half of the bleachers. The girls were playing their main conference rivals, Lynden Christian. They had lost to LC earlier in the season and were ready to get the win. Our crowd was primed to cheer them on to that win. It was a “white-out” game, so all the students were decked out in all white clothing. B-E won in a 5 set match with an overall point differential of one point. After the game both the team and Coach Brewer told us that the crowd support and volume was a big turning point that helped lead the Tigers to victory.
Amazing coaches with high expectations are what make high school sporting events fun to watch and be a part of. A good coach motivates their players, wins championships, and brings in crowd support. Along with being a volleyball coach, Brewer coaches track and is a respected P.E. teacher at Burlington. B-E is truly fortunate to have Tawnya Brewer as a Tiger coach.
