WIAA State Volleyball Championships 2011
This year, two new locations will feature the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Volleyball Championships on Nov. 11-12.
The 3A and 4A tournaments will move to Saint Martin’s University, a venue that previously hosted the 3A tournament from 1998-2001; while eight 3A, 4A consolation games will be played down the street at Timberline High School on Friday.
Bob Grisham is the Athletic Director at Saint Martin’s University, home of the Marcus Pavilion, which will feature a three-court setup for a total of 44 matches over the two-day tournament.
“It’s a chance to showcase the university and be involved with an outstanding event,” Grisham said. “It’s exciting to be a part of the WIAA State Championships again. With 32 of the best teams in the state competing, there will be a lot of energy and a lot of excitement.”
The 2A tournament will also feature a new venue, The Evergreen State College (Olympia). Don Farler, Black Hills High School Athletic Director, is the tournament manager for The Evergreen State College site. He has worked over a decade with the state soccer tournament and is making his debut managing the volleyball event. The Evergreen State College Gym will feature a two-court setup for the 2A matches.
Yakima will once again host the 1B, 2B, and 1A tournaments at the Yakima Valley SunDome. Tournament manager Carol Finney has been involved with the volleyball state tournament since Ellensburg hosted the 1A games in 1999. Yakima has hosted part of the state tournament for six-straight years.
In previous years, the SunDome used five courts and was run over three days. This year’s matches will take place over two days using six courts. Finney has the help of many experts for the event including her two assistant managers, Trudy Bray and Elizabeth Gilbert, both active volleyball officials. Finney and Louise Adams, the announcer for the event, also have backgrounds in officiating.
“The staff has a very solid background in volleyball and it’s a total team effort,” Finney said. “In Yakima, we have a lot of committed people. The city is big enough for expertise and small enough to have a team that works well together.”
