WIAA Names Nyabol Lual and Ryan Henning as "Give Me 5!" Star Students of the Month
4/9/2018

The WIAA is pleased to announce Spokane International Academy's Nyabol Lual and Oakesdale Middle School's Ryan Henning as the March “Give Me 5” Star Students of the Month.

Nyabol Lual is a seventh grade student at Spokane International Academy located in Spokane, WA. She currently participates in cross country, basketball and lacrosse. Lual came to SIA as a refugee from Ethiopia. When she started participating in sports, it opened her up to socializing with her peers and improved her English speaking ability. Her natural athletic ability also helped her to quickly gained confidence and she now participates in three sports. Lual also will be participating in 20 hours of community service this year through SIA.

As a member of the SIA cross country, basketball and lacrosse teams, Lual respects her teammates, and is always the first to congratulate her competition if they win. As a student of the game, she enjoys teaching others who might not have as much knowledge in the sport. Her honesty, commitment and enthusiasm set her apart from the crowd.

“She is a wonderful sport,” PE teacher Cindy Griffith said. “She can win or lose with the same beautiful smile on her face.”

She has come so far in personal growth and now stands as a role model for others when it comes to sportsmanship, following the rules and having a great time.

“I really feel like she has found her voice in sports,” Griffith said. “You will definitely hear her out on the field or court.”

Ryan Henning is an eighth grade student at Oakesdale Middle School in Oakesdale, WA. He has participated in football, basketball and baseball since sixth grade, and has been the team captain for both basketball and baseball teams. Henning is the ASB vice president, in charge of organizing community service events, and a member of FFA and Honors society, all while maintaining a 3.78 GPA.

At the end of the middle school basketball season, Henning moved on to compete with the high school team as well. He also enjoys riding his motorcycle when he has some free time. As the middle school ASB vice president, Henning helped organize a school assembly discussing respect, citizenship and recognition of Oakesdale student accomplishments.

“I have watched many athletic contests over my teaching career,” PE teacher and Athletic Director Ken Lindgren said. “I can say that Ryan is in the top five of athletes who plays with composure and grace.”

Initially, Henning may come across as shy and quiet, but those who know him know see him as a humble leader who works hard and keeps a great attitude no matter what.

“He continually shows integrity and commits himself to others at all times,” Lindgren said. “He is the kind of student-athlete that anyone would want within their school or on their athletic team.”
