WIAA Names Keithley’s Kline and Mattson’s Lysyy as “Give Me 5” Star Students of the Month

RENTON, Wash. – The WIAA is pleased to announce Keithley Middle School’s Rylee Kline and Mattson Middle School’s David Lysyy as the May “Give Me 5” Star Students of the Month.

Kline is an eighth grader at Keithley Middle School in Tacoma, Wash. She competes on the soccer, basketball, and volleyball teams for the Kolts.  She is also a member of the leadership club and participates in club soccer. Even with all these extracurricular activities, she still focuses on her academics by maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. Kline was nominated by Athletic Director, Kyle Foster, for being a great student-athlete and exemplifying what it means to be a Keithley Kolt.

“Rylee has been a constant model student in the classroom, hallways, fields and courts,” Foster said. “She is coachable and pushes herself to be the best and accepts defeat.”

Kline leads her teams and peers by her actions. She displays sportsmanship and is the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave after clean-up.

Lysyy is an eighth grader at Mattson Middle School in Covington, Wash. He participates in football, track, orchestra, and is active with his church youth group. Lysyy was nominated by his head track coach, Chris Rule, for his work ethic, dedication to improvement, and inspiring others.

“David’s demeanor is such that people are drawn to him and are inspired,” Rule said. “My favorite thing about him is that he is a fierce competitor who always gives his all.”

Lysyy displays all of the Middle Level’s core principles by giving maximum effort and setting goals, showing respect during competitions and to others, supporting his friends, and representing his school and community.

The students will be featured on the Activities Matter and the Middle Level websites. The monthly campaign is dedicated to highlighting two middle school students that demonstrate the core principles of the program: honor, sportsmanship, courage, respect, and citizenship.

The nomination process is completed for the 2015-16 school year. The WIAA recognized 20 student-athletes throughout the year and will continue the program beginning in September 2016. The WIAA would like to thank the participating schools who submitted applications and congratulate the student-athletes who had been selected.
