Patsy (Walker) Pointer
Patsy Walker Pointer was an exceptional Track & Field athlete. When her past coaches speak of her, they mention her accomplishments and accolades, but they speak to great lengths about the kind of person she was and is. As an athlete, Patsy Walker Pointer was commonly described as humble, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and supportive. She knew a great deal about the events that she competed in, and worked hard to help her fellow teammates.
Pointer’s athletic accomplishments are extensive. Her high school Track and Field career culminated in a State Championship for Yelm High School in which she scored all forty points needed to capture the 1977 title. Patsy Walker Pointer still holds the records for the 400 meter, 200 meter, shot put, high jump, and long jump events at Yelm High School. In addition to her State Championship title, Pointer was also a 1977 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Champion in the Women’s Pentathlon.
After high school, Pointer went to on to compete at UCLA and Houston University. As a senior at Houston University, Patsy Walker Pointer won the 1981 NCAA Heptathlon and Pentathlon championships. From 1981 to 1984, she was regularly among the top 4 finishers on the U.S. Team behind other greats like Jackie Joyner and Jane Frederick.
