WIAA Partners with Student Broadcasters for Basketball State Championships
3/4/2022

Tacoma, WA - At this year’s WIAA State Basketball Championships, students will be making an impact both on and off the court. Fans will be able to stream every championship game live on NFHSNetwork.com, with student groups from VPS Game Time and West Valley High School partnering with Eli Sports Network to produce championship games from Tacoma and Yakima.

In Tacoma, the site of the 3A and 4A boys and girls tournaments, VPS Game Time will produce multi-camera broadcasts featuring instant replay, live graphics, and play-by-play announcing provided by professionals from the Eli Sports Network. Students from Skyview High School, Columbia River High School, and Union High School (Evergreen Public Schools) will travel to the Tacoma Dome to produce the broadcasts under the supervision of industry professionals.

In Yakima, the site of the 1A and 2A boys and girls tournaments, the West Valley high school video production class has provided coverage during all four days of the tournament and will be adding additional cameras for each championship game. The West Valley video production program has partnered with the WIAA to produce state championship basketball and volleyball events since 2020.

“The partnership is not only a way to bring fans a professional-style broadcast, but an educational opportunity for students interested in broadcasting careers,” said WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman. “As an education-based association, it is exciting to have students producing our broadcasts. This is yet another way the WIAA is working to increase student participation in events.”

Links to every broadcast from the WIAA State Basketball Tournament can be found on the NFHS Network with direct links tied to each game on official WIAA brackets.

VPS Game Time is a sports broadcasting program run by Vancouver Public Schools. Students from across the district broadcast basketball, volleyball, football, and more, learning modern techniques from industry professionals. Their broadcasts can be seen in Clark County on Comcast cable, and anywhere in the world on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

Founded in 1905, the WIAA is a membership organization of over 800 middle level and high schools from every corner of the state with the goal of making memories through education-based activities. The WIAA supports and sponsors 23 sports along with five activities that incorporate over 500,000 student participants. The WIAA and its member schools believe in the value of extra-curricular activities which have been linked to better standardized test scores, increased school attendance, improved physical and mental health, and a more positive student experience.
