Dave has devoted the past 30-plus years to music in the state of Washington, serving everywhere from band director to music teacher to a top administrator at all levels of music education. He completed his Bachelor’s in Music Education (1977) at Boise State University and his Master’s in Music Education (1983) at the University of Idaho. His music teaching began with the Parma School District (Parma, ID) in 1977 before becoming the Instrumental Music Teacher at West Valley High School (Spokane, Wash.) in 1979. After six years at West Valley HS, Dave became the Instrumental Music Teacher at Ferris High School (Spokane, Wash.). In 1998, Dave was named Music Coordinator for the Spokane Public Schools. Since 2004, he has been the Visual and Performing Arts & Events Coordinator for the Spokane Public Schools.
Dave has played an integral part in increasing the enrollment in each of the music programs that he has worked in. At West Valley HS, the band enrollment increased from 40 to 90 members. At Ferris HS band enrollment increased from 50 to over 200 members and the orchestra enrollment from 14 to over 50 members.
In 2011, Dave was named Music Educator of the Year by the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA)/WIAA. He is a WMEA Hall of Fame member and has served as president for both the WMEA and the northwest division of The National Association for Music Education. He received the Northwest (Section 8) Outstanding Music Educator Award from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) in 2011-12. And in 2013, he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by the National Association for Music Education – Northwest Division.
Dave continues to serve on several boards and is rightly considered one of the most knowledgeable and effective educators in the state.
