Megan (Franza) Carlson
Athlete, Cascade (Leavenworth) HS

An elite, multi-sport athlete at Cascade (Leavenworth) High School, Megan, was also a 4.0 student, valedictorian, and Homecoming Queen.

In Track and Field, she earned 16 top-eight finishes in individual events (1994-97) and 12 individual State Championships (1994-97). She remains the 1A Girls State Meet record holder in the 300m hurdles with a time of 43.72 seconds (1995). Megan is a four-time State Champion in the heptathlon (1994-97), capturing 5,090 points in 1996, the most points scored by a high school athlete in state history. She was named Track and Field News All-American in 1996 for her heptathlon performance. In 1996 she qualified for and competed in the Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Ga., where her jump of 6’ ½’’ became the third best in Washington state history. She single-handedly won the team championship at the Lake Washington Invitational (1996) with 36 individual points (1st – 100m hurdles, 1st – high jump, 2nd – long jump, 2nd – 300m hurdles) to defeat the other 78 teams competing across all classifications. That year, she was also named the Gatorade Washington State Track Athlete of the Year.  Megan tallied the second most total individual points in WIAA State Track & Field Meet history with 145 (1994-97).

Her high school basketball career was also outstanding. She was team captain (1994-97), named All Caribou Trail League First-Team (1993-97), Caribou Trail League MVP (1994-97), and Gatorade Washington State Girls Basketball Player of the Year (1997). She was named to the 1A All-Tournament Team (1995-97) and was the 1A State Tournament MVP (1996) setting tournament records in points and three-pointers.  She also finished in the top ten in rebounds, steals and assists. She received Washington State AP Player of the Year (1997) and accumulated 2,344 career points at Cascade. She holds 24 school records across volleyball, basketball, and track and field. She received all-league honors in all three sports all four years and was named KOMO News 4 Prep Athlete of the Year as a senior for both basketball and track.
Her athletic skill led to a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Washington. As a Husky, Megan was a four-year starter (1997-01) and a team captain (1999-01). She was 1st team All Pac-10 (1999-01) and scored 33 points in a win over 25th ranked Stanford during the 1999-2000 season. The Seattle PI voted her as a Sports Star of the Year finalist (2000). Megan became the sixth all-time scoring leader in University of Washington history (2001). The Huskies had an Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Championship (2001) and she was named Second Team Verizon Academic All-American (2001). She was crowned University of Washington Female Student-Athlete of the Year (2001) and received the NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship for outstanding athletic and academic achievement (2001). Megan graduated from the University of Washington with a 3.9 cumulative GPA and was drafted 61st by the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Draft (2001). She was also honored as the North Central Washington Athlete of the Decade (1990-2000).
