The Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires in conjunction with the WIAA proudly present the Smart Choices Scholarship Program. This annual program recognizes one male and one female graduating senior from among the WIAA member high schools for excellence in athletics/activities, academics, leadership and community service throughout his and her high school career. Smart Choices winners receive a $5,000 scholarship toward the institution of his and her choosing. An additional four (4) male and four (4) female finalists receive $1,000 scholarships.

Kyle Sherick
TAHOMA HIGH SCHOOL |
Kyle Sherick has accrued seven varsity letters during his time with the Bears, earning four in tennis and three in baseball while also being an outstanding citizen in his community.
As a freshman, Sherick was named Tahoma’s offensive leader during his freshman year only to be named the Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2016. He turned those individual accolades into team results in 2017 when he helped Tahoma baseball earn an appearance to a WIAA State Championship tournament for the first time since 2012. The senior has been recognized against his peers as well, earning two first team All-League honors in baseball and two first team All-Division honors in tennis.
Sherick was also an outstanding student at Tahoma with a 4.0 GPA and 25 college credits earned. A member of National Honor Society, he has been an active member in his community volunteering with the Northwest Harvest Fights Hunger Program, Maple Valley Food Bank and the Veteran Memorial Wreath Program.
Sherick will attend Seattle University to pursue a degree in bioengineering.
“No other experience in life provides lessons in failure, success, modesty, work ethic, physical pain, heartwarming moments, heartbreaking seasons, camaraderie, laughter, devastation and love all at the same time,” Sherick said. “This is a high school sport and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” |

Katie Henneman
TONASKET HIGH SCHOOL |
Katie Henneman has represented her school at the state level in track and field and cross country while also participating in cheerleading to earn 12 varsity letters at Tonasket High school.
Henneman has made three trips to the WIAA Track and Field Championships and has competed in three-or-more events each time she has been there. Her highest finish came in the spring of her freshman year when she was a member of the fourth-place 4x100 meter relay while her highest individual finish was 11th in the 400 meter as a sophomore.
Her first appearance at a state championship came during her first high school season when she finished 37th at the WIAA Cross Country Championships, helping Tonasket to a seventh-place finish.
Excelling equally in the classroom, Henneman holds a GPA of 3.933 and was named the salutatorian of her graduating class. She has challenged herself throughout high school, earning 14 college credits from seven AP courses. Henneman is currently the Senior Class President at Tonasket and has been involved in her community through 4-H and Future Farmers of America, where she served as District 7 Vice President.
Henneman will attend Washington State University and is well on her way to a career in medicine after already becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.
“The value of participating in interscholastic activities goes beyond the duration of high school,” Henneman said. “They teach the importance of building meaningful relationships and working with others to achieve a common goal, which is a skill that student-athletes can carry with them throughout life.” |
