The Governor’s Office and Washington State Department of Health issued new guidance for returning to education-based sports and activities, on January 5. The WIAA has summarized those guidelines and added clarity for school programs in the Healthy Wasington Sport & Activity Guidelines document.

WIAA Staff will continue to update the resources available on this page as the situation evolves. The WIAA has encouraged leagues to find creative solutions that will promote participation and engagement in their local communities including submitting requests for modifying season schedules and waiver requests for WIAA rules.

2020-21 APPROVED RULE WAIVERS:
WIAA Handbook Rule 17.10.0 - SUMMER ACTIVITIES 2.0
Summer 2.0 was extended for the remainder of the school year (ends with final event per league) with the following conditions:
  • No Summer 2.0 during the first two weeks of any season start date
  • Allow coaches to coach during open gym after the first two weeks of a season
  • No competitions or travel
  • In building only or facilities that school administrators approve
  • Schools may limit the number of hours coaches may coach
WIAA Handbook Rule 17.8.3 - OPEN GYM
Students have a choice of activities offered during a designated time during each week.  All other conditions of open gym remain in effect.
WIAA Handbook Rule 18.23.1 - NON-SCHOOL PARTICIPATION
Regular special treatment or priveleges will be defined as being no more than once a week.
WIAA Handbook Rule 17.27.5 - JAMBOREE
Only two (2) schools need to be involved in a jamboree.  The jamboree limit per school will continue to be in effect, and is indicated in each specific sport section.
WIAA Handbook Rule 43.3.1 - CONTEST DEFINITION
Allows a high school varsity volleyball match to be a guaranteed five (5) sets. The following conditions apply:
  • Based upon the WIAA/WOA Co-Op Agreement, the 5/5 varsity volleyball match fee will be $84.50 (plus travel) per official;
  • The local volleyball assignor(s) must be notified at least one (1) week in advance of the request to play a guaranteed five (5) sets;
  • The officials will report the match score according to the total number of sets played (5-0, 4-1, or 3-2).
WIAA Handbook Rule 18.22.0 - CONCURRENT SPORTS LIMITATIONS
Allows for concurrent participation if specified parameters are met.
WIAA Handbook Rule 17.15.8.A - POSTSEASON QUALIFYING EVENTS
Contests played during a league championship event (the final culminating event for the league) would not count toward the regular season limit during the 2020-21 school year.
WIAA Handbook Rule 18.20.0 - EiGHTH (8th) GRADERS PARTICIPATION WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL TEAM *PIERCE COUNTY LEAGUE*
Allows schools in the Pierce County League to utilize eighth graders in order to salvage baseball and/or softball programs with low participation numbers.
