Nola Betty Ayres
Coach

Washington State Gymnastics and Nola Ayres are synonymous.  She was a coach who held her athletes to high standards in the gym, in the classroom, and in their lives.

Nola Ayres currently holds the national coaching win/loss record at 384-1.  She is the coach behind 26 league championships, 26 district championships, and an impressive 22 state championships.  The Sehome Gymnastics program accumulated the most within in the nation under her reign.  Sehome Gymnastics won its first state title in 1973 and won 13 consecutive championships thereafter.  The program then won seven more consecutive titles under Nola’s direction.  After her retirement in 1993, Sehome won four more championships, bringing their total to 24.

Nola has been repeatedly recognized as an outstanding coach.  The most recent of these awards came in 1999 when she was inducted into the Washington State School Gymnastics Hall of Fame and the WSGCA Gymnastics Coaches Hall of Fame.  In 1991, she was inducted into the Western Washington University Hall of Fame.  In 1986, she was named National Federation Coach of the Year.  In 1985, she was named National High School Regional Coach of the Year and National High School Coach of the Year.  In 1978, Nola was named Washington State Gymnastics Coach of the Year.

Nola is currently very active in judging gymnastics meets and was named USAG Optional Judge of the Year in 2001.  One of Sehome’s alum, Vicky Vanderpol, says it best: “If it wasn’t for her, we’d be just like all the other teams.”
