Kelly McDonald
Fine Arts

A passion that began while a high school sophomore has continued almost 20 years later for Kelly McDonald.
He was awarded the National Forensic League’s Ruby Award for competitive success over the course of his career.  He and his debate partner were the first team from Auburn High School to qualify for the National Forensic League tournament in cross examination debate.  During his senior year, Kelly and his partner finished third in the AAA state tournament, the highest finish by a Auburn student up to that time.  He was also named to the All-District team for the South Puget Sound League his senior year.  During his senior year, Kelly was considered one of the best debaters in the nation based on his skills and abilities.  In 1989 Kelly received the Forensics Award, given to the top individual in the program for that year.
Kelly lettered three years in debate and graduated from Auburn High School with honors.  He had a double major in communication studies and history while at PLU before graduating in 1993 cum laude. His M.A. came from the University of Kansas, where his major areas of study included rhetorical criticism and communication theory.  In February 1998, he graduated with a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas.  Kelly has kept very busy with the forensics community.  While at Pacific Lutheran University, Kelly was the tournament director for the high school speech and debate tournament, one of the largest in Washington.
Kelly McDonald is currently a professor at Arizona State University in the School of Communication and the Director of Forensics.
