Jeanne Eggart Helfer
Walla Walla High School, 1977

Jeanne Eggart Helfer was a four-sport participant at Walla Walla High School.  She participated in basketball, tennis, track and field volleyball.  In track, she was state champion in the javelin and was one of the top javelin throwers in the country. In basketball, she led her teams to a 56-6 three-year record and three trips to the state tournament, finishing second twice and third once.
Eggart Helfer was a two-time, first-team, All-State selection and finished her three-year basketball career with a 25.1 scoring average. She also was named a high school All-American in 1977. She was a two-time most valuable player on the volleyball team and was district champion in tennis. She also was an outstanding student, finishing with a 3.77 grade-point average.

Eggart Helfer continued her athletic exploits at Washington State University (WSU), where she competed on the basketball team and the track and field team.  She was the first female athlete at WSU to earn a scholarship.  She ended her career as the most prolific scorer in school history with 1,967 points in four years. She also holds WSU records for scoring average (18.4), field goals, free throws, assists and steals.   In track, Eggart Helfer set the WSU javelin record as a sophomore, and that mark of 178-3 still stands today. She took a year off from basketball to train for the Olympics and finished fourth in the javelin in the 1980 Olympic trials.

Eggart Helfer took her athletic background into the coaching ranks and was a highly successful girls basketball and track coach at Mead High School and Mount Spokane High School in Spokane. Her Mead girls basketball teams finished in the top four at state eight times, including three state championships (1990, 1992 and 1996) and one runner-up finish in 1991.
