Glad to be a Bulldog

Sports bring community together. At Garfield High school we love our athletic programs because they bring out our Bulldog pride. It is the strong community that I am grateful for as I finish my cross country season this year. Being part of the Garfield Cross Country team, with its caring, supportive teammates, coaches, parents and community members, is what truly makes the sport worthwhile.

Recently my Garfield Cross Country team hosted our end of the season banquet where we recognized and thanked our amazing coaching staff, runners and families who supported our team through our season. It was heartwarming to hear the personal stories of how the community's support of our team's successes personally motivated many of our runners. During the evening, so many people spoke of their gratefulness for all that the team gave them. Many seniors told of how being part of the team sparked a passion for running in them that they thought they would never have had otherwise.

During the season we not only felt support from our team members, but also from the community that surrounds Garfield. When my teammates and I were out on runs throughout the neighborhood, people would often stop what they were doing to give us a big smile and a cheer saying “go lady bulldogs!” That acknowledgement always made us feel so good.

In recent years, Garfield has lacked school spirit when it comes to spirit days and attending ASB run events. But, what we don't lack is school spirit for our sports teams. Garfield students attend sporting events, cheering as loud as they can for our Bulldogs. At Garfield we even have a strong alumni group that funds scholarships for students. They still have fun hanging out together and reminiscing about old times. I had the chance to visit with many of them recently and enjoyed hearing about times from the past. Their stories focused on the past Garfield athletic victories and their team comradery.

We love our sports at Garfield High School. They give us a place where we can challenge ourselves, show school pride and build friendships that can last for decades. Being a part of Garfield athletic teams means so much to me. With the Bulldog spirit in us as we take to the cross country courses we wear our purple proudly. Thank you to the Garfield Bulldogs for another wonderful cross country season!
