Growing up in a small town I have really been able to grasp the true meaning of a community. Whether it’s a Friday night football game, weekday volleyball set, or Sunday morning choir concert, the members of the community are always present and showing their support. Just in the month of March, we have two major events that receive overwhelming support.

On March 9th, I participated in the Distinguished Young Woman program. Over 300 people attended. The event took place in our Paul Lauzier Activity Center. Our school’s gym is named after Paul Lauzier who was a Grant County farmer who passed away and left $14 million in a private foundation. Six years ago, the Paul Lauzier Foundation gave our school district $1 million toward building our new school. Thus, we have an amazing gym facility.

Each March the ACH Foundation also organizes an auction. This wonderful event takes place in Hartline’s community gym and provides all the extra-curricular funding for our school system. From the time the doors open at 5 pm, there are a variety of activities happening. This year, the auction’s theme is Casino Night. The evening will consist of casino games, a silent auction, card raffles, door prizes and a live auction. The event is catered by Eagle Catering of Almira, Washington and will be served by 40+ high school students. The student volunteers are required to work at the auction from serving appetizers and dinner, to selling tickets and on to washing dishes. The students are a main part of making the auction a great success. As a high school student, I am very grateful for all the community members who come and support the event. By being a part of the night, they are showing how much they care about our school, and want to make each and every one of ACH students’ schooling memorable and a special experience. The auction generally nets around $45,000 dollars. This money is distributed for many different needs for grades kindergarten all the way through the senior class.

There are normally around 200 silent auction items and 40 live auction items. Over 300 attend the event.  Considering the population in Almira, Coulee and Hartline is only 800 people, that is a great turnout. For the 2013 event, the Booker Auction Company will be the auctioneers. In effort to entertain the guests, our high school principal/superintendent Jim Evans will be singing, and a freshman student will be playing her cello during dinner hour. This is truly a community project that displays how many people are willing to donate items, attend the event and support a worthy cause. Enriching the lives of ACH students is the ACH Foundation’s mission. The auction is one particular event that demonstrates their true vision.  You can go to www.achauction.com for more information and pictures from this year's event.
