Hi! My name is Julie Wilson and I am currently a junior at Vashon High School. I enjoy being involved in my school by participating in student government, cheerleading, wrestling, mentoring at our local elementary school, and Key Club.  My hometown of Vashon Island lies in the heart of the Puget Sound, and although it’s small, there is never a shortage of exciting events.

As Vashon High School is on the trimester schedule, December marks the start of a new trimester. With it comes a host of new activities and a new sports season.

Auditions for this year’s musical, Camelot, are well underway. Due to a large number of girls in the play production class, some of the traditionally male roles are being switched to women’s role. It should be a wonderful production by the vibrant theater arts students. Debate is off to a good start as well, with an enthusiastic group willing to travel around the state for various competitions. Our band put on a lovely winter concert, to ease us into the holiday season.

As far as sports go, there are a lot of hard workers this year! For the first time in over a decade, our winter cheer squad has men on the team. Two football players decided to try something new, and I know the cheer squad is happy about it; it never hurts to have some extra muscle for stunting. The girl’s basketball team has a lot of new freshmen talent this year, with a few even making varsity. Junior basketball varsity player Cat Amick said, “This year should be a great year! We have some re-building to do, but we have girls who are motivated and ready to put there all into it.” The boys are also off to a great start, filling the house at their first home game of the year. The level of excitement in that gym really brought the student body together, sending everyone home with a smile on their face. And lastly, wrestling. This year they have their largest roster in nearly a decade with almost 30 students turning out this year.  This is my first year wrestling and so far I love it. Practice has a lot of energy and everyone is very friendly and willing to help.

So as you can see, although our island may be small, we have a lot to do and a lot to be excited about. The best part of the winter season is the way it brings out our school spirit and support for each other. Good luck to all of the Washinton sports and activities teams this winter.  Happy Holidays!
