Hello, my name is Helen Petersen and I am a senior at Prosser High School in Prosser, Washington. Prosser is located about 30 minutes from Tri-Cities and about 45 minutes from Yakima. It is a town of about 5,000 people and is known mostly for its wine industry and for being the home of Kellen Moore, the Boise State University Quarterback.
Sara Gettys/Yakima Herald-Republic | Prosser High has a reputation for turning out great athletes and people. At PHS I am involved in varsity soccer, basketball and tennis as well as being ASB President, competing in Knowledge Bowl and being in National Honors Society. Fall sports for us have begun and are in full swing as we prepare for conference games and matches. Girls soccer and boys football are back after both losing in the State Quarterfinals to East Valley Spokane last year. The Mustangs are looking strong with multiple starters back for both sports. The girls are have won four games and tied one while the boys are 2-0 in conference play. Girls swim returns a State qualifier from last year and volleyball looks good as well. Cross Country is also returning a couple of State qualifiers.
This coming Sunday, Prosser High School is holding its first annual HopeFest. This is my presidential project and something I have been working on for a few months now. A local girl named Sofia was recently diagnosed with the fatal Batten’s Disease and Hopefest is a benefit concert for her family to assist in paying for medical and travel expenses. The concert features local bands and has an expected turnout of about 500 people. This has been something the entire school has really embraced with amazing spirit and enthusiasm so it is a very exciting time us right now.
Between planning Hopefest, playing soccer and getting ready for homecoming it has been a very hectic first few weeks of school but I really wouldn’t have it any other way. The community of Prosser is a truly unique one and offers a support system that very few places can compete with.
